was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay:  野に寝ていた貧しい羊飼いのもとでした

on a cold winter's night that was so deep.  羊たちを連れていた時でした

イギリスの古いクリスマス・キャロルです。讃美歌21の258番。歌詞は15世紀
ころのものですが、現在の曲は18世紀頃のものだそうです。この曲を有名に
している Noel,Noel の繰り返しのところは No-well と書かれているものも
ありますが、これはNoelの古い時代の綴りです。ほか、draw nigh という
表現がありますがnighは near の意味の古語です。draw near は「近づく」。
nought は naught と書かれているものもありますがどちらも同じ意味。
bought と並ぶので nought のほうがいいと思います。

この歌は2001年12月にNHKの「英語であそぼ」で幻想的な美しい映像とともに
紹介されていたのが印象的でした。それに出演していたElizabeth Hardcastle
(現・エリザベス泉)は翌年度の「英語であそぼ」のエリー役で1年間レギュラー
出演しました。

ご指摘を頂きました。↑でこの映像に出演していた女の子なのですが、2002年度
の「英語であそぼ」エリーのElizabeth Hardcastle ではなく、同じく2002年度
「街角ドレミ」ナナ役のナディア・ギフォード（Nadia Gifford）ではないか
ということです。勘違いしていたようです。どうも済みません。
